Linguistics of English and Translation Studies (LETS)
The aim of English linguistics is to advance our understanding of how the English language works. We analyse the underlying system and subsystems (e. g. lexicon, syntax) of the language and how speakers use the resources the language system offers in actual discourse. More specific topics that we focus on include language variation and change, English-German contrasts, and language acquisition. In research and teaching, we use an array of methods (e.g. psycholinguistic experiments) and resources (e.g. corpora).
Prof. Dr Svenja Kranich accepted the Chair of English Linguistics at the University of Bonn in October 2016. Due to her research interest in different aspects of translation, the chair is now called Linguistics of English and Translation Studies - LETS!
Hanna Bruns, a PhD candiate under Prof. Kranich's supervision, has recently published a paper based on her Master's thesis. It is titled "“That’s all it takes to be trans”: counter-strategies to hetero- and transnormative discourse on YouTube" and can be found open access via De Gruyter.
The 18th International Pragmatics Conference was held in Brussels, Belgium, from 9 to 14 July 2023. Svenja Kranich organised a panel called "English address terms in a globalized world: Socio-cultural impact on recent language variation and change". Additionally, Svenja Kranich held a talk with Hanna Bruns titled "Democratization effects on nominal address terms – Sir and Guys in 20th and 21st century American English".
Hanna Bruns also presented on her own a talk called "Connecting socio-cultural developments and language change: Recent variation in gender-inclusivity in the USA and the UK"
