Keltologisches Kolloquium: Dr. Karolina Rosiak
Drawing on data from an ethnographic study conducted in Wales between 2014 and 2018, the present paper will discuss the motivations to learn Welsh as well as language ideologies and attitudes of the research participants (Polish adult migrants) towards
the usefulness of learning Welsh in their lives and future professional careers.
In their document Cymraeg 2050: A Million Welsh Speakers (2017), the Welsh Government emphasizes not only the role of intergenerational transmission for achieving their target number of speakers, but also that of new speakers, i.e. those who acquired the language outside home, for example in schools or as adults, and coming from different backgrounds. It is therefore important to understand what motivates Poles, currently the largest migrant group in Wales, to learn Welsh, both on language courses and informally in the сommunity, and to integrate into Welsh communities.
