TAIlored to your needs: Using AI in FL education

Since the release of ChatGPT, digital tools powered by artificial intelligence (AI) have taken the world of education by storm. It became evident that AI bears the potential to disrupt the way foreign languages are taught in manifold ways (e.g., assessment, adaptive teaching, the relevance of linguistic knowledge). These innovations pose another challenge to teachers as they need to adapt their lessons to the affordances of AI. This talk provides (future) teachers with the knowledge and tools to implement AI (with a particular focus on large language models and generative AI) in the foreign language classroom. First, I explain how AI is different from conventional programming and discuss the implications for the responsible use of AI. Second, I briefly summarize empirical findings on the effectiveness of AI in foreign language education. Third, I present different approaches to address AI in foreign language education (AI as a topic vs. AI as a tool). This will be an interactive talk.
